Practical session on "1v1 against the goalkeeper"

In a 90-minute practical demonstration, Peter Schreiner showed how he systematically trains attackers to beat the goalkeeper in a 1v1 situation.

Basic drills with dummies were followed by training formats under time pressure and against the goalkeeper. Schreiner then showed complex continuous formats on two goals focusing on "1v1 against the goalkeeper" and, finally, a game format in which players, coming out of a match situation, had to sprint towards goal and beat the goalkeeper.

The strikers had 4 options:

  1. Either they shoot the ball past the goalkeeper into the corner.
  2. They dribble around the goalkeeper.
  3. They beat him with a nutmeg (risky – but sometimes the only way to get the ball into the net
  4. They use a lob/chip over the goalkeeper (when the ball is bouncing – for example after a lofted pass)

Why do training formats with target zones and no goalkeepermake sense?

  1. You have no goalkeeper available.
  2. If you want to achieve high numbers of repetitionsin competitive finishing training as well, training formats with target zones in the goalare very useful.
  3. Goalkeepers quickly get fed up when lots of shots come in one after another that they often cannot save.

Encounter in the VIP area of the Levski Sofia stadium

Michael Probierz, who had been Poland's national team coach for two weeks, recognised Peter Schreiner and approached him. This led to some interesting professional conversations.

Probierz had come to Sofia to watch one of his national team players in the match between Levski Sofia and Ludogorets Razgrad.
